Why does my iPhone show 'SOS only' while traveling?

By Serhat Dogan · Last updated 2026-06-04

'SOS only' means your iPhone can reach a network for emergency calls but isn't registered on one for your own data. With a Miyaw eSIM it almost always means the line isn't switched on, isn't selected for data, or has Data Roaming off. It's not a fault with the eSIM — work through the three checks below and service returns in a minute or two.

What 'SOS only' actually means

Your iPhone found enough signal for emergency services but hasn't registered onto a network that carries your plan. For a travel eSIM, that registration needs the line switched on and Data Roaming on, while you're in a covered country.

The three things to check

First, the Miyaw line is switched on. Second, Data Roaming is on for that line. Third, Network Selection is set to Automatic so the phone can pick a local partner network. The steps below do all three.

Fix 'SOS only' step by step

  1. 1Settings → Cellular → tap the Miyaw eSIM → make sure 'Turn On This Line' is ON.
  2. 2Cellular Data Options → Data Roaming → ON.
  3. 3Network Selection → turn ON Automatic so the phone searches for a local network.
  4. 4Toggle Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, then off.
  5. 5Restart the iPhone.
  6. 6Still 'SOS only'? Confirm you're in a country your plan covers, then email hello@miyaw.io.

eSIM setup & troubleshooting

Is 'SOS only' an eSIM problem?
Usually no. It means the iPhone has not registered on a usable data network yet. For a travel eSIM, the fix is to turn the Miyaw line on, enable Data Roaming, and leave Network Selection on Automatic.
How long should service take to return?
After those settings are correct, toggle Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds. Registration normally returns within a minute or two if you are in a covered country.
