eSIM vs pocket WiFi: which should you use abroad?

For most solo and couple travellers an eSIM beats a pocket WiFi device: it activates the moment you land with no airport pickup or return, adds no extra gadget to charge, and costs less for a single phone. A pocket WiFi still wins when you need to share one connection across several devices or people.
eSIM vs pocket WiFi, side by side
| What matters | eSIM | Pocket WiFi |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Install before you fly; online on arrival | Reserve, then collect and return a device at the airport or by post |
| Extra hardware | None — uses the phone you already carry | A separate router to carry and recharge daily |
| Battery | Only your phone | Two batteries to keep charged; if the router dies, no internet |
| Sharing | Hotspot from your phone (uses battery) | Built to share with several devices and people |
| Cost for one traveller | Pay only for your data | A daily rental fee whether or not you use it |
When an eSIM is the better choice
If you travel solo or as a couple with one or two phones and want zero pickup hassle, an eSIM is simpler. eSIM is mainstream now — GSMA Intelligence expects around 55% of smartphone connections (about 4.9 billion) to use an eSIM by 2030 — and any iPhone since the iPhone XS (2018) or a recent Android supports it. You install the plan before you fly and you're online the second you land, with nothing to queue for and nothing to give back.
When a pocket WiFi still makes sense
A pocket WiFi router earns its keep when a family or group needs to share one connection all day, when some devices have no eSIM (older tablets, some cameras), or when you tether heavily for hours. A dedicated router shares better and spares your phone battery. For a single phone, though, the daily rental fee plus the pickup and return usually outweigh that.
eSIM vs pocket WiFi: common questions
- Is an eSIM cheaper than pocket WiFi?
- For one traveller, usually yes — you pay only for your data instead of a daily device-rental fee. Pocket WiFi works out cheaper per person only when several people share one router.
- Do I need to return an eSIM like a pocket WiFi?
- No. An eSIM is a digital profile on your phone — there is nothing to pick up or return. You can delete it any time in Settings.
- Can I share an eSIM with my family?
- You can turn on your phone's hotspot to share, but it drains your battery. If several people need to be online at once, a pocket WiFi router is built for that.
